The Sea Ranch

The Sea Ranch

The Sea Ranch served as a deeply inspirational and continuous place of return for Halprin. A planned unincorporated community located 120 miles north of San Francisco, Sea Ranch, along with the surrounding area of the Northern California coastal landscape, had become an intimate part of Halprin’s life even before he was professionally involved with its settlement. In the collection of works on paper from the Sea Ranch, one can trace a path of Halprin’s efforts over the years as he experimented with different media and styles - from quick sketches to vivid watercolors. When considered alongside some of Halprin’s built projects, the connection between the Sea Ranch drawings and Halprin’s environmental-design style is apparent.
